Yard Sale Regulations 

The City of Leeds has established the following rules and regulations for garage sales, basement sales, rummage sales, and similar activities on residential properties. These regulations are designed to ensure that such sales are conducted in an orderly and lawful manner.

Who Can Conduct the Sale

  • The sale must be conducted by the applicant or members of their immediate household only.
  • Items for sale must be the legal property of the applicant or household members, surplus to their needs, and not include items purchased or consigned for resale.

Sale Duration and Frequency

  • Sales can be conducted for no more than two consecutive days.
  • Sales are limited to once every three months.

Neighborhood Garage Sales

  • Multiple families can conduct a neighborhood garage sale at the same location.
  • All participants must meet the conditions outlined above.

Rummage Sales by Organizations

  • Religious, charitable, civic, or service organizations may conduct rummage sales for goods donated to them.
  • Such sales are also limited to two consecutive days.

Advertisement Regulations

  • Front Yard Sign:
    • One sign may be placed in the front yard of the sale location.
    • The sign can be erected no more than two days before the sale and must be removed on the final day of the sale.
  • Directional Signs:
    • Up to two directional signs are allowed in permitted locations (refer to prohibited locations)
    • Signs must include the sale address and date.
    • These signs can be erected one day before the sale and must be removed on the final day of the sale.
    • Signs must not exceed six square feet in area and cannot be illuminated or animated.
  • Violations of these sign regulations will result in a misdemeanor charge and fines as per the city fine schedule. Nonconforming signs may be confiscated and destroyed.

Permit Requirements

  • A permit is required to conduct any such sale.
  • Applications may be made via the portal or at city hall - 1400 9th St, Leeds, AL 35094.
  • Permits will be issued upon verification of the stated conditions and payment of the fee as per the city fee schedule.
