“Some historians speculate that April Fools' Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1.

People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called ‘April fools’.”

Leeds Senior News 12/19/2024

The Leeds Senior Center has had an extraordinary year, and a wonderful holiday season – from Thanksgiving thru December 19. We heard the 1^st graders sing their Christmas program, we marched in the Christmas parade, we ate great food, and even had a visit from Santa!!

Leeds Senior News August 30, 2024

The first college football game was played between Rutgers and Princeton on November 6, 1869. There were about 100 people in the stands. Times have changed!

Check out our pictures on Facebook!! We have had a great two weeks, with a lot of time spent on the road – The Bass House, The Birthplace of Helen Keller (Ivy Green) and the Rattlesnake Saloon. A huge thank you to Dale, our great bus driver. He took us to Tuscumbia and back.

Senior News June 14, 2024

Thank you (!) to Joe Becker and Margaret Little for welcoming us and showing us the Bass House. If you have not put this Leeds historic stop on your “to do” list, this summer is the perfect opportunity. So much of Leeds history is on display throughout the home. Also, it’s amazing that the original Bass family raised NINE children in this house.

This week the Senior Center schedule has lots of changes. Specifically, we will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday is a holiday, and on Thursday we are traveling to Tuscumbia. The home of Helen Keller (Ivy Green) and the Rattlesnake Saloon await us.
